I got word that a new Mexican sushi restaurant opened in Dobie Mall, and it’s called Sushi Caliente. Kidding? I think not. Yet again, I didn’t know what to think. I imagined it would be a mixture of Mexican ingredients placed in sushi. Were they thinking about using algae instead of tortilla? I was curious, so I prepared for the worst and checked it out.
I asked the attendant, who is also the owner, which plate was the hottest on the menu and went for that, the Doc Roll. It was nowhere near the top of my hot-o-meter, which was disappointing, but it had a unique, fresh flavor combining tempura with spicy sauce.
The owner told me that the idea of the place came because when he was a student in Austin he saw how popular sushi places were. So he went back home to Veracruz, in Central Mexico, and opened up a sushi place there. But people didn’t know what sushi was, and they were afraid of trying something new. So he had to “Mexicanize” it in order to appeal to customers, incorporating chile, cilantro, onion and other ingredients often found in Mexican cuisine.
Definitely weird, but hey, weird can be good.
